Choosing the Right SPF for Summer

Understanding SPF Levels

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, measures how well a sunscreen can protect your skin from UVB rays—the kind that cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer. While no sunscreen can block 100% of UVB rays, using one with at least SPF 30 is recommended, as it blocks about 97% of UVB rays.

Here’s a breakdown of different SPF levels and the protection they offer:

• SPF 15 filters out approximately 93.3% of UVB radiation.
• SPF 30 increases that to about 96.7%.
• SPF 45 offers 97.8% protection.
• SPF 50 and SPF 60 both provide about 98% protection.
• SPF 70 steps it up to 99%.
• SPF 100 tops the chart with 99.9% protection.

Although it might seem like higher SPFs provide much more protection, the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 100 is actually just about 3 percentage points. This illustrates an important point: more isn’t always significantly better when it comes to SPF ratings.

Choosing Your SPF

When choosing a sunscreen, consider your skin type, the duration you’ll be exposed to the sun, and the intensity of the sun’s rays. For everyday use, an SPF 30 is typically sufficient. If you plan on spending extended time outdoors, especially near reflective surfaces like water or snow, opt for a higher SPF to ensure more comprehensive protection.
